Construction of our Chainmail Armor

Our LARP shop always uses the best material and design for each handmade product. You’ll find that most of our metal work armours are made from mild steel with full-grain leather fittings, some finished with Epic Armoury’s Dark Metal coat to prevent rust. The result is a durable, high-quality product that will last with proper care.

Our chain mail costume products are made from mild steel butted rings and constructed using a 4-in-1 design. We also offer heavier and more durable riveted options for intense LARP battles, and have a range of sizes for men and women.

The History of Chainmail

Our chainmail armor is inspired by one of the oldest types of armour in the world! Historians believe that chainmail was first introduced in the 4th century B.C. during the famous battle between the Greeks and Persians at Thermopylae. It was very popular in Roman and early medieval ages by infantry and early knights.

Chainmail was designed to protect against slashing weapons, preventing cuts and stab wounds. Some chainmail was even known to stop arrows when paired with a thick gambeson! Eventually, chainmail was replaced by larger pieces of hard plate during the 1400s, since plate was more effective against bludgeoning damage and even bullets. However, it was still used as an underlayer and for joints thanks to its flexible nature.

Maintenance of our Metal LARP Gear

Epic Armoury Metal Work chainmail products should be treated with oil and kept in dry storage. If your armour does get wet, it is important that you dry it as soon as possible and keep it clean with a soft cloth! Lightly oil the clean surface with a quality mineral oil before storing it, and make sure to check it every few months for signs of rust.
If any rust is found--and it can be hard to see on individual rings!--remove it by gently rubbing the affected spot with a mildly abrasive pad dipped in paste wax, oil, or water-displacing liquid
