Construction of our Shoulder Armour
Our LARP shop always uses the best suitable material for each handmade design. You’ll find that most of our hard leather armours are made from vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather. The result is a durable, high-quality product that maintains it shape and is resistant to water. Some of our orcish designs, however, are made using chrome-tanned split leather, providing a more flexible product with a natural suede finish.
Most straps are made from top-grain leather, which is a strong but flexible material ideal for getting the best fit. Buckles are made of mild steel and are brass-plated. We stitch around the edges of our armour with strong thread to strengthen its structure and increase its useful lifetime.
Any colour added to our leather is dyed directly into the material itself and not painted on top, minimizing the risk of staining your costume or other LARP gear.

The History of Shoulder Armour
Our leather armour is inspired by historical armour traditionally made from metal; we’re especially influenced by the knight’s bevor, gorget, spaulders, and pauldrons. These armours were designed to protect the neck, shoulders, armpits and upper arms in battle, and fluctuated greatly in size and maneuverability. For example, a mounted knight with a lance would be more likely to wear a large and bulky pauldron, while an infantryman would wear lighter, more flexible spaulders.
Neck and shoulder armour was often designed with sculpted ridges and overlapping plates to provide reinforced protection and to deflect attacks away from the head. They replaced chainmail during the 1400s and supplemented the breastplate to provide necessary protection in vulnerable areas.
Maintenance of our Leather LARP Gear
Handmade and crafted from real leather, expect Epic Armoury shoulder armour to last you a long time with proper care. These products are very durable, but require regular maintenance with leather care products to stay flexible and to increase usability. Make sure your products are kept dry when stored. Let wet leather dry naturally before treating. If frequently wet and dry, increase frequency of maintenance.
